- Chapter Twelve -

* * *

We ride into Asgard and separate, going our different ways. I have a sudden urge to visit Odin and see if he’s okay. It seems like a long time since I saw him that night outside the entrance of Yggdrasil leading to Mimir’s well. The thought has me chuckling. It was only a couple of years ago that I would never have considered visiting Odin of my own free will. But he’s changed since the colossal attack on Asgard. I guess some of his stubbornness broke that day.

An image of a crumpled Odin flashes in my mind, reminding me that something broke him this time as well and not in a good way.

After leaving Elan in the large courtyard at the side of the palace, I skim the steps, taking them two at a time. Both sides of the entrance are manned by two guards.

“Greetings, Valkyrie!” the guard on the left calls. His small chin barely holds the strap of his helmet and contrasts with his large, pointy nose, making his normal-sized eyes seem small in comparison.

“Greetings, Birger!” I call before reaching the top of the steps.

His face spreads into a broad smile.

“Greetings, Gorm!” I call to the guard on the right.

A glimmer of appreciation passes through the eyes of the guard with the large chin divided by a cleft. “Who are you coming to see today?”

It was only a couple of years ago that they would do anything to stop me from getting inside the palace. How times have changed. “I’ve come to visit Odin. Is he here?”

“We haven’t seen him leave,” Gorm says.

They open the doors to the palace, indicating for me to go through. I enter the large, open corridors lined with marble and massive pillars. The extravagance is impressive and far from the state of my residence and the Valkyrie Academy. My shoes scuff loudly on the floor from my open and unafraid steps.

So many times in the past, I had to hide when I passed through these halls. It’s a nice change, not having to hide behind every pillar to avoid the guards as I weave through the palace.

A guard stands outside the throne room, and I enter through the double doors unhindered only to find it empty.

I exit, bearing a frown of confusion as I glance at the guard outside in the hall.

His spine is rigid and tall as it presses toward the wall. His horned helmet overwhelms his head, and his curious blue eyes meet mine as he gazes down at me. “Greetings, Kara. Why are you here?”

“I’ve come to see Odin.”

“He is unwell. He hasn’t been to the throne room today.”

I push my mouth to the side in thought. “Yes, I heard. I’ve come to see how he is and update him on some news.”

The guard nods once. “I will escort you to his chambers and see if he wants to see you.”

“Thank you, Den.”

It was only a couple of years ago that Den was dragging me back to the Valkyrie Academy, far away from Odin.
